A countries foods can tell you a lot about the people. The same works vise versa: A countries people can tell you a lot about the foods. For example, how often to do you see a fat Korean? Just about never. But how often are larger Americans seen? Oh, around half a dozen a day, depending on where you are. Obesity is a growing problem in the United States, but why is not a becoming issue in other countries as well, such as France, or Italy?
It's common knowledge that obesity is a problem in U.S., and it seems as though we have done little to stop it. Fast food restaurants are growing, and super-sizing their food, feeding the chubby little Americans that waddle through the door on their way to and from work. Admittedly, fast food is quick, so it makes sense that the quicker option would be the better option. But quick isn't always best. While you may be eating your grease-coated meal just minutes after you order it, the calories and then the fat come almost as quickly. And lo and behold, instead of trying to burn off the excessive amount of calories that have just been gained, we sit in front of our computer or stare at our phones for hours on end, with little to no concern for our bodies health.
Fast food is only a small part of America's epidemic. Bodybuilding.com had quite a few thoughts on the subject. They stated that the reason French and Italians aren't nearly in as much trouble as the U.S. was because they actually took time and tasted their food. "Italians and the French are passionate about their food. They take time to make it and they take time to enjoy it."
Another popular reason, stated by the same website, ensued that appearance had a big role. "Italians and the French are consistently concerned about how they look." As strange as that is, it makes loads of sense. Here in America, we have grown adults going to work in Pajama-jeans. Tell me, please, why is that a thing? While we are being constantly bombarded with pictures of how we should look, nobody actually tries to look like that. Most of us see the perfect models, and just give up on looking attractive. We are in constant comparison. The French, however, strive to look their best, because quite frankly, appearance is a big deal.
Obesity is here; it is the norm to go out on the streets a see a few over weight folks. It's hard to lose weight, and not particularly fun, but it is well worth it. Being called the 'obese country' isn't a positive thing to be associated with. We can still come out of this, with hard work, probably more than we think, a ton of exercise, taking time to drink tea, and healthier food choices. America does not have to be the country suffering through obesity, but we are only what the people of America make us to be.
